INVITATION FOR CHAPTERS
Quality Enhancement of University Teaching and Learning: theories and cases.
ABOUT THE ANTHOLOGY
This anthology will showcase successful experiences with quality enhancement of university teaching and learning. We seek chapters which address the kind of questions sketched below and provide valuable insights into quality practices that have clearly helped improve university students’ learning outcomes.
Three framing concepts
Three concepts set the scene for this anthology
1. The concept of learning
2. The concept of curriculum
3. The concept of teaching and study methods
The first concept addresses learning as both process and outcome. What is learning? How does learning take place? How is learning measured? Dealing with such questions will help produce a clear understanding of the link between quality initiatives at universities and students’ learning outcomes. It is a requirement for all chapters in this anthology that they explicitly deal with the concept of learning as both process and outcome, and they should explicitly argue for the link between quality initiatives and students’ learning outcomes.
The second concept addresses curriculum as both structure and process. What is curriculum? How does the curriculum structure teaching, study methods and learning? Which kinds of processes can be facilitated by the curriculum? Such discussions of the art and role of the curriculum will help produce a clear understanding of the link between curriculum and students’ learning outcomes. It is a requirement for all chapters in this anthology that they explicitly deal with the concept of curriculum. In particular they should address the link between quality initiatives at curriculum level and students’ learning outcomes.
The third concept addresses teaching and study methods applied within the curriculum. What is teaching? What is a study method? What are the relations between teaching and study methods and students’ learning outcomes? What roles do different kinds of teaching and study methods play in the curriculum? Addressing these questions will help produce a clear understanding of the relationship between teaching and study methods and students’ learning outcomes. It is a requirement for all chapters in this anthology that they explicitly deal with the concepts of teaching and study methods. In doing so they ought to define the teaching and study methods applied in their curriculum, and they have to argue for the link between quality initiatives at curriculum level, the teaching and study methods and students’ learning outcomes.
Together these three concepts provide a backdrop for an anthology of articles from educators/researchers who have successfully improved the quality of university teaching and learning. In this way the understandings reached within each concept will expressly inform the overall theme of the anthology: “Quality Enhancement of University Teaching and Learning: theories and cases”.
IT IS A REQUIREMENT that you EXPLICITLY DISCUSS HIGHER EDUCATION and CENTRE YOUR DISCUSSION on the central themes of the book as presented above. EACH CHAPTER proposal must clearly state its position in relation to one or more of the central themes: 1. The concept of learning; 2. The concept of curriculum; 3. The concept of teaching and study methods. EACH CHAPTER proposal must clearly address the issue of students’ learning outcomes in relation to the quality enhancement initiative/discussion. How do you know that the initiative has improved students’ learning outcomes.
NOTE: We do not seek chapters addressing overall political or contextual aspects of quality improvement, such as accreditations, benchmarks, institutional policies, etc. This anthology SPECIFICALLY DEALS WITH MICRO-PEDAGOGICAL ASPECTS OF QUALITY ENHANCEMENT. It is a requirement for acceptance that your contribution clearly addresses QUALITY ENHANCEMENT OF UNIVERSITY TEACHING AND LEARNING.
